The Adobe® AIR™ runtime enables you to have your favorite web applications with you all the time. Since applications built for Adobe AIR run on your desktop computer without a web browser, they provide all the convenience of a desktop application.

Companies like eBay and AOL are using Adobe AIR to create exciting new applications that allow you to use their services on your desktop.

In short, Adobe AIR means applications that are easier, more powerful, and more fun to use.

With the Adobe® AIR™ runtime, you can deliver branded rich Internet applications (RIAs) on the desktop that give you a closer connection to your customer.

Adobe AIR uses the same proven, cost-effective technologies used to build web applications, so development and deployment is rapid and low risk. You can use your existing web development resources to create engaging, branded applications that run on all major desktop operating systems.

The benefits are extensive. By using Adobe AIR as part of your RIA strategy, you can boost productivity, extend your market reach, enhance customer satisfaction, improve customer retention, lower costs, and increase profits.

Business benefits - Adobe AIR offers an exciting new way to engage customers with innovative, branded desktop applications, without requiring changes to existing technology, people, or processes.

For developers - The Adobe® AIR™ runtime lets developers use proven web technologies to build rich Internet applications that deploy to the desktop and run across operating systems.

If you are still asking what it's for, try this site:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/marketplace/index.cfm?event=marketplace.home&marketplaceid=1
It's an official market for software written for Adobe AIR. Maybe you can find something useful.

For those that dont read what they download here it is....

Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) is based on the technology that allows creating desktop applications (for general purposes) using web technologies like HTML, Ajax or Flash. Developers can take advantage of their knowledge in website creation to develop multimedia applications. In other words, from a web application they can create a general application with the contents and utilities of a web application.

The program is freeware, distributed to any users of software created with AIR, or developers that desire to create desktop applications from web projects. That means that you don’t need anything special to get the benefits of Adobe AIR capacities.

The main advantage of the program is that the applications created with AIR are multiplatform. That means that a program could be used in any type of computer, no matter what the Operating system that computer has. With this Adobe is trying to solve one of the main inconveniences for a developer: create an application that would run on any computer/Operating system. They are still working on solving all problems of incompatibility that may exist when a program is running on different systems...

You dont have to be a developer to use this software just install it and away you go.... It will work in the background for you
